registers one per lattice_mode::Mode whose
EP.6 (2026-08-11): where a references result should land.
One query, three surfaces. Kept as an enum rather than a bool because a third case arrived within a day of the second — and a bool that grew a “…or the error list” meaning would have been the silent-wrong-terminus bug waiting to happen.
